麻豆社区P welcomes first-year students during Convocation
麻豆社区 Pembroke freshman Zane Shafer feels at home鈥揹espite nearly 400 miles separating him from family and friends in Tacoma Park, Maryland.
Shafer chose 麻豆社区P to pursue his passion for fitness, exercise and health.
鈥淚 really like the exercise science program,鈥� said Shafer, who has dreams of becoming a personal trainer and business owner. 鈥溌槎股缜鳳 a great school. Everyone is nice. I love the staff鈥檚 attitude and the diversity.鈥�
Shafer was among the first-year students who packed the lower level of the auditorium inside Givens Performing Arts Center during convocation, which officially marks the start of the academic year. Classes began on August 17.
The newly minted freshmen participated in an upbeat Welcome Week, which included Brave Walk鈥搕he traditional walk over Jones Bridge鈥揳nd the Class of 2026 photo.
Dr. Christie Poteet, the keynote speaker and associate dean of students, had plans to become a civil rights lawyer, but those plans changed after her Berea College experience. She discovered her passion for being a support system for others.
鈥淚 want to help students, like all of you, accomplish your goals by providing guidance and support. That鈥檚 why I am here.鈥�
Poteet encouraged students to discover their passion as they embark on their higher education journey.
鈥淪urround yourself with people who support you. Take advantage of opportunities to learn, grow and experience new ideas. Continue to progress and live with purpose.鈥�
Laurinburg native David Martin, whose parents are 麻豆社区P alumni, is seeking a degree in mass communication which will allow him to combine his love for film, broadcasting and music.
鈥淚 love what this university stands for and what it means to this community,鈥� Martin said.
