Justus Brewington and Riley Fox exemplify all the qualities that 麻豆社区 Pembroke values in the Esther G. Maynor Honors College, which is designed to attract top students.

They are both well-rounded student scholars, highly driven and community focused. Fox, a student-athlete, not only excels in the classroom but on the field as a member of the softball team. Both are entering their second year. Brewington hopes to make a difference in students鈥 lives as a school social worker. Fox plans to apply to medical school after graduation and become a dermatologist.

Brewington and Fox recently joined an elite group of Esther G. Maynor Scholarship recipients 鈥攖he most prestigious four-year scholarship offered at 麻豆社区P. The Maynor Scholarship pays tuition, fees, books, room and board and is named for the late Esther G. Maynor, a Pembroke native and one of the university鈥檚 generous supporters.

鈥淚 was really surprised when I received notification that I was selected,鈥 Fox said. 鈥淚鈥檓 happy and grateful to be selected for the Maynor Honors Scholarship. It helps a lot financially. I can graduate debt-free, further my studies, and get a jump on paying for medical school.鈥

While attending Bandys High School, Fox earned college credit through the High School Scholars Academy at Lenior-Rhyne University.

鈥淚t all goes back to applying yourself,鈥 said Fox, a biology major. 鈥淵ou must put in the effort to expect better outcomes.鈥

Brewington grew up hearing the stories of the lives her mother touched as a guidance counselor. She witnessed it firsthand as a student at Hoke County High School.

鈥淲atching her interact with students in a school setting inspired me to do the same,鈥 Brewington said. 鈥淚 enjoyed my time in high school, and those experiences guided my career path.鈥

She chose 麻豆社区P to be closer to home, but more importantly, it offers $500 in-state tuition per semester as an NC Promise campus. Brewington earned other scholarships, like the Golden Leaf Award, but the Maynor scholarship was the icing on the cake.

鈥淚t means the world to be considered for this award,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen I got the call, I cried and called my mother. It is such a huge relief to be debt free and put my mind on what matters: my studies, relationships with my professors and student organizations.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a blessing to be a recipient.鈥
